July is peak season for much of the Northern Hemisphere: school holidays, high airfares and crowded beaches. But it's also low season in large parts of the world, and even in Europe there are cities where July is affordable and pleasant. Best value destinations for July 2027

1. Kraków, Poland

Kraków is one of Europe's best-value city breaks. The Old Town and Wawel Castle are free to wander, summer brings open-air concerts and the Jewish Culture Festival in Kazimierz (usually late June to early July), and a meal in a traditional milk bar costs very little. Day trips to Auschwitz-Birkenau and the Wieliczka Salt Mine are easy by bus or tour. Book the Auschwitz visit well ahead in summer.

2. Budapest, Hungary

Thermal baths, ruin bars, Danube views and grand architecture at prices well below Vienna's. In July, swap the indoor baths for the outdoor pools at Széchenyi, and look for the summer events on Margaret Island. Public transport passes make getting around cheap.

3. Sofia and the Bulgarian mountains

Sofia is one of the cheapest capitals in the EU, with Mount Vitosha on its doorstep for hiking. Rila Monastery is a classic day trip, and the Seven Rila Lakes trail is at its best in July. Combine with a few days on the Black Sea coast for a cheap beach finish.

4. The Albanian and Montenegrin coast

Albania's Riviera (Himarë, Ksamil, Dhërmi) has clear water and lower prices than Greece or Croatia across the water, though it has grown busy in high summer. Book rooms early, or stay in smaller villages. Montenegro's Bay of Kotor is pricier but beautiful; stay in Perast or Herceg Novi rather than inside Kotor's old town.

5. Lisbon and the Portuguese coast

Lisbon is no longer a secret bargain, but it's still cheaper than most Western European capitals, with free viewpoints, cheap trams and excellent food. July is warm and dry. For lower prices, stay outside the centre or base yourself in a smaller coastal town. Book early: Portugal is busy in summer.

6. Medellín, Colombia

The "City of Eternal Spring" has mild weather all year, so July is as pleasant as any other month. Ride the metro cable cars, visit Comuna 13 with a local guide, and take a day trip to Guatapé. Accommodation and food are inexpensive. Check the current State Department travel advisory and use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps.

7. Peru and Bolivia: the Andes in the dry season

July is winter in the Andes: cold nights but dry, sunny days, which makes it the best season for Machu Picchu, Cusco, Lake Titicaca and the Uyuni salt flats. It's also busy, so book Machu Picchu tickets and the Inca Trail months ahead. Daily costs in the region are low once you've paid for the flight.

8. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Mexico's Pacific coast is in its rainy, low season in July, with lower hotel prices. Rain usually comes as short, heavy storms in the late afternoon or evening, leaving mornings sunny. It's hot and humid, and the hurricane season is on, so buy travel insurance and keep plans flexible.

9. Vietnam and Southeast Asia in the green season

July is the wet season in much of Southeast Asia, which brings lower prices, fewer tourists and lush landscapes. Hanoi is hot with rain showers. Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Da Nang) is usually drier in July than the north and south. Bali, by contrast, is in its dry season and its busiest. Expect afternoon downpours in most of the region, and plan indoor backups.

10. Busan, South Korea

Korea's second city combines beaches (Haeundae, Gwangalli), temples and seafood markets, with fast, cheap trains from Seoul. July is hot and the rainy season usually runs through much of the month, so pack an umbrella and plan museum time.
